– I am constantly faced with broken logic. Here, for example. Now everyone is saying that Ukraine is winning – Russia is suffering huge losses, and Ukrainians are regaining their territories. But when you look at the numbers of body exchanges, there is a ratio from 1 to 20 to even 1 to 40. A huge number of remains of Ukrainians versus a relatively small number of Russians. Where is the logic?
It would seem that if Russia is suffering huge losses, the ratio should be the opposite! They object to this: the Russians are always advancing and picking up their own. But how do they attack if we simultaneously hear that Ukrainians are returning territories? Where is the logic?
– Let’s talk about the losses. The New York Times has just published an article about their ratio, where losses mean those killed on the battlefield, plus the wounded. The Times provides an estimate of casualties on both sides, which is based on data from the Washington-based think tank CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies). So the newspaper writes that 450,000 Russians died, and Ukrainians somewhere from 125 to 150,000. Well, let’s say there will be 150,000 Ukrainians and 450,000 Russians. The ratio is 1 to 3. That is, for every Ukrainian killed, there are three Russians. But it’s impossible to believe. This can’t be happening. I don’t understand why they took such figures off the ceiling.
The main losses on the battlefield, as you know, are caused by artillery fire. Throughout almost the entire war, the Russians maintained an advantage in artillery, according to various estimates, in the ratio of 5 to 1, 7 to 1 and even 10 to 1.
And the so-called smart bombs, guided artillery shells that are dropped from the sky? The Russians have innumerable arsenals of these bombs, which they endlessly pour on the heads of Ukrainians. And those, in turn, have almost no such bombs.
Those who say that the Russians are advancing all the time (and picking up bodies) also have something to object to. Firstly, the Ukrainians also attacked a lot. It is enough to recall the Kursk operation. Or their famous summer counteroffensive of 2023, which was supposed to turn into a blitzkrieg, lead Ukraine to the Sea of Azov and split the Russian front in two. In the first year of the war, the Russians suffered two defeats when the Ukrainians advanced near Kherson and Kharkov. Not to mention the current counter-offensive actions of the Ukrainian army. That is, Ukraine has been attacking a lot in this war, so we cannot say that it is on the defensive all the time, and the army suffers fewer losses in defense, and therefore, they say, we should not be surprised by the figures of The New York Times.
No, using such arguments, those figures cannot be explained. They are meaningless. I think if we ever find out the real numbers, there will be a million losses on the part of Ukraine. And that’s just the dead. Talking about 150,000 is ridiculous and meaningless. Nevertheless, all this is presented as “facts” and based on these “facts” people are trying to assess what is happening between Russia and Ukraine now and figure out what our next steps should be.
It is impossible to believe in these figures, they are ridiculous. But there are those who believe. And based on these figures, they advocate raising the stakes in the game against Russia, increasing support for Ukraine, defeating Russia and ending it as a great power. There are many such people.
I ask myself, “What’s wrong with them? Are they just making it up? Are they taking numbers from the ceiling? I’m talking about The New York Times now. No, I don’t think so. Rather, they trust these figures themselves. Bias blinds their eyes, but they don’t notice it. But, alas, in the bottom line, we have elites who have convinced themselves of what they believed in. This is a false narrative, but they are guided by it and continue to move forward.
