On July 4, Turkey handed over to Russia 24-year-old activist Ariadna Litvinova, who was wanted by the Russian authorities in a criminal case on repeated “discrediting” of the army. The plane carrying Litvinova flew to Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport, where she was detained. It is not yet known by what procedure Turkey handed over the activist — extradition or deportation.

This is the first publicly known case of Turkey handing over to Russia a man who is being persecuted for a nonviolent anti-war action.

Litvinova has been wanted in Russia since February 2026. On the anniversary of her death in 2025, she wrote “Murderers”, “Peace to Ukraine” and “Freedom to prisoners” on pro-war advertising banners near the arch of the General Staff. Then she was sent to a pre-trial detention center, but later the measure of restraint was replaced by a ban on certain actions, and she was able to leave Russia.
