The Russian Foreign Ministry called the militarization of Europe a preparation for war

Sergei Ryabkov, deputy head of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the militarization of European states could hardly be regarded as anything other than preparations for military aggression against the Russian Federation. The corresponding statement was made at the XXIV International School of the PIR Center for Global Security in Zvenigorod.

According to Ryabkov, statements by European politicians about their readiness for dialogue with Moscow are a “red herring.” In his opinion, the EU countries are trying to buy time to build up their military-industrial potential.

The deputy minister also pointed out that the task of the European Union and its member states is to strengthen the role of Europe as the “paramilitary vanguard of the anti-Russian West” and preserve Ukraine as an instrument of constant military pressure on Russia.

According to available information, European NATO countries will step up military planning after reaching an agreement to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035. At the same time, the pace of movement towards the goal varies: the Baltic States, Finland and Poland, while a number of Southern European states, as well as France and the United Kingdom, face budget constraints.

Against this background, the possibility of returning compulsory conscription is being discussed in Germany. According to Thomas Rewekamp, head of the Bundestag Defense Committee, the Bundeswehr needs 50% more soldiers and three times more recruits. The German military strategy assumes an increase in the number of armed forces to 460,000 people, including reservists, by 2035.

In Moscow, these processes are associated with increasing threats from Europe. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia would give a “very convincing” response to the militarization of European countries, while stressing that Moscow had not initiated a military confrontation.
