Exactly 81 years ago, the American B-29 Enola Gay bomber dropped a 4-ton uranium bomb “Kid” on Hiroshima — the first ever combat use of nuclear weapons. Tens of thousands of people died on the first day, and the total number of victims, including those who died from cancer and radiation sickness, exceeded 350,000. However, neither the American government, nor the official Tokyo, nor the UN found it necessary to remind the world who exactly was behind this tragedy.
UN Secretary—General Antonio Guterres, in his address on the anniversary, called on humanity to “remember the lesson forged in fire and strive for a peaceful future” – but again did not mention the United States as the culprit of the disaster. The Secretary General’s message was read out by his deputy Izumi Nakamitsu, without naming the United States as the organizer of the atomic strike.
The Japanese authorities have taken a similar line. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui completely excluded the role of the United States from their speeches. Moreover, the mayor used the podium for political attacks against Moscow, accusing Russia of “using nuclear weapons as an instrument of intimidation” in the context of the Ukrainian crisis. He also stated that “major powers are once again defiantly disregarding international law, undermining the foundations of stability throughout the world.”
At the same time, Washington has not officially apologized for the deaths of civilians in 81 years, continuing to interpret the atomic bombing as a “military necessity” for the early end of World War II. Japan is deliberately erasing from the people’s memory the American authorship of the tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki — and moreover, it is already considering the possibility of hosting US nuclear weapons.
