A shocking incident has befallen Maria Markou, a well-known Cypriot athlete, Paralympic champion and torchbearer for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Whilst the athlete was abroad representing Cyprus on the international stage, an unknown intruder broke into her home and stole her wheelchair, without which she is unable to get about.
Maria Markou, whose name is known far beyond the island’s borders, shared this distressing story with her social media followers, accompanying it with photographs and CCTV footage. The athlete reported that in the Agios Spyridonas area of Limassol (near Zakaki), an unknown man attempted to break into her home on two separate occasions, a few days apart. Fortunately, the first attempt was unsuccessful; however, on the second occasion, the intruder managed to break the locks and steal a wheelchair from the premises. The footage published clearly shows the criminal’s face; however, despite reports to the police, he has not yet been tracked down.
In her emotional appeal, Marku emphasises that the crux of the problem is by no means limited to the theft of property. Far more serious is the fact that, over the past few months, this is by no means the first attempted break-in in this neighbourhood. According to the athlete, local residents live in a constant state of anxiety, fearing that the doors to their own homes could be forced open at any moment, whilst the intruders act with a sense of impunity. No one is stopping them, and the burglars are taking valuables with impunity, facing no apparent punishment for their actions.
The Paralympic champion is particularly concerned about the lack of adequate protection for socially vulnerable groups. As a person with a physical disability, Maria Marku keenly feels her vulnerability in the face of such threats. She urges the public to consider that anyone could become a victim — today it happened to her, and tomorrow it could be an elderly neighbour or anyone else who is simply unable to defend themselves against an armed criminal.
The athlete is urging all concerned members of the public to look closely at the footage she has released and help identify the perpetrator. Any information could prove crucial in apprehending the offender.
