Rescuers managed to evacuate five people from three vessels. Among those rescued are Mavropoulos’s companion and daughter, who managed to jump into the sea before the boat sank. The man himself, according to preliminary information, was trapped among the wreckage of the vessel. Divers found him unconscious and flew him by helicopter to hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Mavropoulos was born in Limassol in 1949 and was involved in trade, investments and real estate. He was also well-known in the rally world: in 1986 he became Cyprus champion. In 2014 he took part in the creation of the Cyprus Historic & Classic Motor Museum in Limassol, donating part of his personal car collection to the museum.
