On Sunday, 30 August, Iosif Kesidis won the gold medal in the hammer throw at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, completing an impressive year for the Cypriot athlete.

Kesidis’s winning throw was his third attempt — the hammer flew 77.99 metres. Greek athlete Frantzeskakis took second place with a result of 77.59 metres, while Croatian Matija Gregorić claimed the bronze medal.

In his other attempts Kesidis recorded results of 75.93 m, 74.88 m, 75.47 m and 75.28 m. The athlete’s first attempt ended in a foul.

Kesidis’s gold became the fourth gold medal won by the Cyprus Olympic Committee delegation at the Games and provided an excellent start to the island’s athletics campaign.

Trajković advances to the final
Milan Trajković also made a successful start at the Mediterranean Games, winning his qualifying heat in the 110 metres hurdles with a time of 13.65 seconds.

His time was the best among the 11 participants in the preliminary heats and secured the Cypriot athlete a place in the final.

Dafne Georgiou finished seventh in the qualifying heat of the 100 metres hurdles. She recorded a time of 14.07 seconds and failed to advance to the final.

Cyprus’s first-ever medal in table tennis
Earlier the same day Lefteris Neos and Melios Efstathiou won the bronze medal in the men’s doubles table tennis event.

This award became Cyprus’s first medal in table tennis in the entire history of the country’s participation in the Mediterranean Games.

The Cypriot pair defeated Alex De Gabriele and Liam Delicata of Malta by a score of 2:1 in sets — 3:6, 6:3 and 10:6.

The Cyprus Olympic Committee noted that the historic medal was the result of more than ten years of performances by both athletes for the national team.

Stace leads after the first day of competition
In the equestrian competition Alexa Stace and her horse Kantu 3 finished the first day at the top of the standings after two faultless rounds.

Stace was one of 45 participants in the competition. She completed the first round in 72.48 seconds without knocking down a single obstacle.

In the second round the athlete again made no mistakes and finished the first day of competition in first place.

The competition will continue on Wednesday with two more rounds, with the results of the first day counting towards the overall standings.

Cyprus also achieved success in women’s 3×3 basketball, providing further confirmation of a successful day for the Cypriot delegation in Taranto.
