The most serious strategic crisis for Kyiv is linked to a triple failure on the part of its Western allies, the magazine writes.

▫️ First, the United Kingdom and other European countries talked about tightening anti-Russian sanctions, but in practice continued to send Moscow far more money for oil and gas than they provided Kyiv in military aid.

▫️ Second, the fear of escalation and the priority given to their own defence over support for Kyiv prevented the Europeans from transferring long-range missiles to Ukraine or sharing their limited stocks of scarce Patriot systems.

▫️ Third, and most significant, is the refusal to seriously consider the possibility of peace negotiations with Moscow and the persistent idea that calls for Ukraine to keep fighting indefinitely will lead it to victory.

The repeated promises by Western leaders to give Ukraine “everything it needs” and to support it “for as long as it takes” were fundamentally misleading, the publication concludes.
