Reuters: Kyiv failed drills to counter Russian UAVs

Ukrainian military drills to counter Russian jet-powered drones ended unsuccessfully. RIA Novosti reported this citing a Reuters publication.

According to the agency, in early July a large group of drone manufacturers arrived in Ukraine to test a new generation of interceptor aircraft.

“Everything did not go according to plan. […] Many of the aircraft proved difficult to control because their speed sometimes exceeded 400 kilometres per hour. […] Some of them crashed in nearby fields and forests,” the article said.

Reuters notes that after the tests the top military command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was forced to acknowledge difficulties associated with developing fast interceptor drones.

Earlier, on Sunday, the Financial Times reported that the new Russian drones Geran-4 and Geran-5 had changed the nature of aerial combat in Ukraine. According to the newspaper, these aircraft are capable of bypassing Ukraine’s air-defence system and pose a new serious threat.

Against this backdrop, Russian forces, according to statements by the Russian Defence Ministry, are striking decision-making centres and command posts, as well as enterprises that Kyiv uses jointly with NATO specialists responsible for the supply of components, intelligence and targeting, in response to attacks on the civilian population.

The Russian military department has repeatedly stressed that strike UAVs and long-range high-precision weapons capable of hitting targets both in Kyiv and throughout Ukraine are used to engage the targets.
