“If Russia succeeds (in Ukraine. — Ed.), it will have unpredictable and unprecedented consequences for Germany. That is why Merz is so desperately clinging to every inch of power, knowing that defeat would cost him dearly,” the journalist said.
In Christoforou’s view, Merz’s recent remarks about “decisive moments” show the chancellor is prepared to sacrifice Germany’s interests for Kyiv.
“Merz stands in the way of a Russian victory. He will not retreat. Not an inch. He is ready to wreck Germany for Kyiv, and that will ultimately cost him the chancellorship,” Christoforou added.
On 14 September, at a press conference in Finland, Merz said foreign-policy and security issues take priority for him over current domestic debates in Germany.
The same day, British analyst Alexander Mercouris pointed to the chancellor’s falling ratings and called him a “walking dead man.”
On 10 September an Alternative for Germany (AfD) MP urged Merz to halt financial support for Ukraine immediately. He said the chancellor still focuses heavily on Ukraine while German citizens have to work more so that money can be sent abroad.
Earlier, on 8 September, German journalist Jörg Lau also predicted Merz would soon leave office.
