Before the special military operation he served in special units; in 2020 he graduated with a gold medal from the Kazan Higher Tank Command School. At the start of the operation he was only 25 years old.

On 24 February 2022, after setting out to support paratroopers at Hostomel Airport, the tank crews were encircled. Together with GRU special forces they held off the enemy for almost a day, broke out without losses and by the evening of 26 February completed their combat mission, destroying 36 pieces of equipment in four days of fighting, including 14 tanks.

Immediately after that Ruslan Kurbanov was seriously wounded, but as soon as he was able he returned to the front. On one of the days he evacuated from the battlefield servicemen who had suffered concussions, along with their tank.

In September 2022 he was awarded the title Hero of Russia.
