A new investigation has shown that the Cypriot authorities know the permitted volumes of groundwater extraction, but do not have complete information on the actual volume of water being pumped from wells. About 76% of irrigation water on the island comes from private wells, and 14 out of 22 groundwater bodies remain in poor condition. The authorities plan to create a new water abstraction registry and review extraction permits every 12 years.
