Cyprus will tighten checks on foreigners

The Cypriot authorities intend to tighten control over students from non-EU countries. The reason is cases in which study permits have been used for residence and work without compliance with the established conditions.

Education Minister Athena Michaelidou and Deputy Minister for Migration Nicolas Ioannides discussed checks on attendance, academic performance and the legality of foreigners’ employment.

Particular attention will be paid to those who obtain a student residence permit but in practice stop studying. State services and educational institutions will increase information sharing in order to detect violations even before entry or the renewal of permits.

At the same time, legal work by students who comply with the requirements of the law will remain available.
