Schools in Paphos are overcrowded:

there are not enough places for children, and educational institutions are being built on cemetery land. The Cyprus parliamentary education committee found serious problems with the condition of school buildings and overcrowding during an inspection of schools in the Paphos district.

On Friday, 2 October, the committee visited several schools in the district to assess learning conditions and the needs of pupils and teachers.

Committee chairman Chrysanthos Savvidis said Paphos is in a particularly difficult position: many schools are overcrowded, and the average number of pupils is significantly higher than in other areas of Cyprus. In some cases classes have to be split to provide the rooms needed for lessons.

The situation is especially serious at the Tsada primary school, which needs repairs and an extension. The biggest problems concern the kindergarten, which stands on land belonging to a cemetery. According to Savvidis, the preschool must be moved to a new building.

The committee chairman called on the authorities to speed up the modernization of existing school buildings and the construction of new facilities. Priorities include the Nikolaidio Gymnasium project and the 7th primary school.

“Pupils keep arriving, but the buildings stay the same,” Savvidis said, warning that without long-term planning the overcrowding problem will only get worse.

The parliamentary committee will continue inspecting schools in Paphos and gathering information on necessary repairs, building extensions, and the creation of new classrooms.
