Elderly people in Cyprus face problems in several areas at once, from pensions to medical care

The Cyprus Observatory on Ageing Issues has reported serious gaps in the system of support for the older generation.

Among the main problems are a lack of specialized geriatric care, difficulties with rehabilitation after treatment, the rising cost of living and inadequate pensions, as well as the need to strengthen oversight of nursing homes.

Particular attention is drawn to loneliness, social isolation, age discrimination, and cases of neglect and abuse.

Another problem is bureaucracy. To receive the assistance they are entitled to, older people often have to apply to several ministries and government services at once, going through lengthy procedures.

The Observatory proposes creating a post of commissioner for older people in Cyprus with real powers. The commissioner should coordinate the work of government agencies, monitor respect for the rights of the elderly, and take part in shaping public policy.

The organization stresses that Cyprus’s population is aging, so the existing system needs to be adapted to the new conditions.
