In Cyprus, for the first time in three decades, cancer has taken first place among causes of death, overtaking cardiovascular disease. This was reported at the end of the 12th Pancyprian Public Health Conference.
Experts regard these figures as a serious warning and are calling for stronger cancer prevention, starting from childhood. They propose paying particular attention to diet, physical activity, the fight against smoking, and regular disease prevention.
At the same time, about 2% of health spending in Cyprus goes to prevention programs, while the European average is roughly 4%.
Specialists stress that public health depends not only on the quality of medical care, but also on lifestyle, the environment, and socioeconomic conditions.
One of the key tasks now is described as a shift from treating the consequences to more active disease prevention.
