The British bases plan to install new antennas in the Merra area on the Akrotiri peninsula. The project is currently being discussed in the Cyprus parliament.
Environmentalists and local residents fear that construction could harm one of the island’s most important natural areas. Nearby are the Akrotiri salt lake and protected wetlands.
More than 300 bird species live in the area, and over 800 plant species grow there. According to environmentalists, the existing antenna structures already place an additional burden on nature and may be dangerous for birds.
Conservation organizations are demanding a full environmental assessment of the project and an evaluation not only of the antennas themselves, but also of the related works — road construction, foundations, and earthworks.
Environmentalists also insist that a final decision be made only after an open discussion and a thorough assessment of possible damage to nature.
