Electricity in Cyprus has become 27% more expensive. In October, electricity in Cyprus rose in price by 27%

The two-month bill of an average consumer increased from €206 to €260, Dialogos reports. Business energy costs are also rising, so many other things may become more expensive further on — from essential goods to services.

Why has electricity become more expensive?

A representative of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), Christina Papadopoulou, on Astra radio explained the price increase by the global energy crisis. Fuel for power plants has become 48% more expensive: a ton cost €620 in April, and in October already €920.

In addition, the fuel and emission quotas that the EAC purchased in advance, even before the summer, have run out. As a result, the price per kilowatt-hour for the consumer has risen from 26 to 33 cents, taking into account VAT and other charges.

The situation is aggravated by dependence on liquid fuel: power plants that provide 90% of the EAC’s generation operate on it.

How does the EAC plan to reduce the price?

To cut costs, the EAC is asking the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) to allow it to buy cheaper “green” energy from private producers. There is no permission yet.

According to Papadopoulou, the transition to natural gas, when it begins to be imported to Cyprus, should also reduce the cost of production.
