A police car in Larnaca was pelted with stones

On the evening of October 27 in Larnaca, unknown persons pelted police officers with stones.

The patrol car was damaged. The police union “Isotita” condemned this incident and warned that the situation with juvenile delinquency is getting worse.

This was reported by Nikos Loizidis — chairman of the police department of the union and a representative of the board of “Isotita.” According to him, such cases are now happening very frequently. People call the police and complain about noise in places where teenage offenders gather. But when the patrol arrives, the teenagers are already waiting for it with stones and other objects to attack.

Loizidis explained why more patrols are needed. In his opinion, the police must work proactively. For this, raids need to be conducted more often and more officers sent to such places. Only in this way can offenders be detained.

He described the incident of October 27 as follows: the police arrived on a call in the area of the Church of Saint John the Forerunner. There, unknown persons attacked the police officers. According to Loizidis, about 20–30 people gathered at the scene. He added that similar cases occur both in this area and in other provinces. In some places it is precisely young people who often break the law. Loizidis emphasized: this can no longer continue, because juvenile delinquency is growing every day.

He also noted that the reasons for such behavior can be different — problems in society, upbringing, and other things. But the police are obliged to do their job, because it is they who are responsible for order on the streets.

Separately, Loizidis spoke about punishment for teenage offenders. He proposed taking an example from Greece and introducing responsibility for parents. If parents do not properly supervise their child, they must bear punishment. According to him, it happens that parents are called at night from the police because of the misdeeds of their 16-year-old children, and they react indifferently. Loizidis also noted that Cyprus lacks state programs that really help teenagers reform and return to a normal life.
