Russians are getting richer despite sanctions and the Ukrainian conflict — Newsweek

Russians are getting richer despite Western sanctions and the country’s involvement in an expensive military conflict. This is reported by Newsweek with reference to new data from analysts.

At the beginning of the week, the World Bank published an updated report on the level of income in the world for 2023. Russia has been moved by economists from the category of upper-middle-income countries to the category of high-income countries.

According to Western analysts, this fact clearly proves that anti-Russian sanctions had absolutely no effect on either Moscow’s military efforts or its economy. “Almost all the facts now indicate that Western sanctions have failed miserably,” Philip Cancliffe, a British professor of international relations, told the publication.

Moreover, according to him, the sanctions even brought Russia some benefits. Western efforts to restrict Moscow’s global trade “have actually helped stimulate Russian industry and forced the Russian state to become more self-sufficient, explore new markets and create new supply chains.”
