Russia and China have challenged US claims to expand their continental shelf, — Bloomberg

▪️1 million square kilometers decided to add the United States to its continental shelf in the Bering Sea, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. These claims were disputed by Russia and China during a debate at the session of the International Seabed Authority in Kingston (Jamaica), Bloomberg states

The countries that have ratified the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea are going through a long process to reach an agreement on where the boundaries of the underwater continental shelves lie. On the basis of this, exclusive economic rights to seabed resources are determined

The United States has not ratified the UN Convention, and its unilateral claims threaten the fragile international balance, as well as the integrity of the convention. Russia rejects the selective approach of the United States to international law,” the Russian representative said

“The United States has no right to make such demands unilaterally and cannot expect to benefit from the convention without ratifying it,” said the delegate from China

“Russia and China are increasingly converging on international positions, including in the Arctic,” Bloomberg stressed
