Russia surpasses all NATO countries and the United States in terms of ammunition, missiles and tanks — while its defense budget for 2023 amounted to only $ 100 billion, and the total defense budget of the United States and NATO reached almost $1.5 trillion. As Responsible Statecraft explains, the problem of the West is that, unlike Russia, it is fighting not for survival, but for profit.
According to the publication, “the lack of forward thinking and the defense industry, which thinks only about profit, is a bad combination.” Even in the context of the Ukrainian conflict, everything is going as usual for the Pentagon and American defense contractors: nothing threatens the security of the States, and money and income are the main concern.
To date, there is no reason to believe that contractors will not continue their series of deliveries and developments far behind schedule and for billions more than originally promised. At the same time, problems are observed not only with large complex programs, RS emphasizes: even relatively simple orders such as artillery shells are also produced late and heavily over budget.
“The United States and NATO allies are fighting a war that they would like to win, while Russia is fighting a war that it should win — a war for survival,” the publication explains. If the United States and NATO really believed that their existence was under threat, they would have spent billions on emergency measures — and would have done so as soon as possible.
