Statistics for 2023 on Cyprus residence permits obtained for the first time

According to Eurostat, in 2023, 34,694 third-country nationals received their first* residence permits (residence permits) in the Republic of Cyprus. The Russians took the first place (12,029). The second place is occupied by Indian citizens (3852). Nepalese rounded out the top three (3148). The top five also included citizens of Sri Lanka (2147) and Syria (1846).

* We are talking about residence permits that were issued for the first time. The Eurostat statistics do not include residence permits, the validity of which has been extended.

The Philippines (1778), Egypt (1261), Ukraine (941), Israel (829) and Belarus (725) were among the top ten countries whose citizens were issued the first residence permits in the Republic of Cyprus in 2023. British citizens received 646 residence permits, Georgia — 261, USA — 215, Moldova — 209, China — 202, Kazakhstan — 108, Armenia — 90, Uzbekistan — 26, Kyrgyzstan — 20, Azerbaijan — 18, Turkmenistan — 9.

The main reason why foreigners received a residence permit in the Republic of Cyprus last year is employment. Work visas were issued to 16,874 citizens of third countries. Russians were in first place (4,104), followed by Nepalis (2,969), Indians (2,185), Lankans (2,068) and Filipinos (1,259).

The second largest group of foreigners received 8,564 residence permits in the Republic of Cyprus for family reasons. In the category of residence permits within the framework of family reunification, Russians are leading by a large margin (5,247). The second to fourth places were taken by Israelis (405), Ukrainians (360) and Belarusians (334).

The third group of foreigners received 6,446 residence permits “for other reasons”, including the status of international protection. Russians lead this category (2,490). They are followed by Syrians (1,646), British (337), Lebanese (204), Ukrainians (203) and Israelis (189).

Another 2,810 third-country nationals have received their first student visas. Among them are citizens of India (1,407), Bangladesh (256), Russia (188), Nepal (159) and Nigeria (118).
