More than 800 illegal landfills have been identified using new technologies

A pilot program using satellite imagery and artificial intelligence has identified more than 800 illegal landfills across Cyprus between April and July 2024, PERIODSIS, an offshoot of the CYENS Center of Excellence, said on Wednesday.

The DumpMapper service, implemented in six municipalities, including Nicosia, Larnaca and Paphos, found 820 cases of garbage dumping, ranging from small piles of garbage to larger areas with a volume exceeding ten cubic meters.

The project showed that municipalities with larger geographical areas and dispersed populations, such as Ipsonas and Lakatamia, have the highest incidence of illegal landfills.

Significant accumulation of waste was also observed near public roads and dead ends in large municipalities.

PERIOPSIS said the pilot program marks “an important milestone in the fight against illegal waste dumping and littering in Cyprus.”

The company sees this as a global innovation and an example of successful public-private cooperation using new technologies.

It is expected that the results will be used to develop municipal waste management strategies throughout Cyprus.

PERIOPSIS plans to expand the DumpMapper service internationally, with initial interest from municipalities in Greece and India.
