The Kurchatov Institute has developed a model of an underwater nuclear vessel for transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) without breaking the ice cover
Due to the lack of contact with ice, the speed of the gas carrier will be about 17 knots, which will reduce the flight time along the NSR from 20 to 12 days
To integrate into the existing transport infrastructure, a gas carrier must have a cargo capacity of about 180 thousand tons and a draft of no more than 14 meters. The length of the vessel will be about 360 meters, and the width will not exceed 70 meters
It is planned to equip the vessel with three Ritm – 200 nuclear reactors, which will provide power to three rowing electric motors with a capacity of 30 MW each
