Residents of Cyprus were asked to prepare for emergencies. To do this, download the app and find the shelter closest to your home.
Panagiotis Liasidis, a representative of the Civil Defense, said that “The best preparation is prevention and information.”
“People are nervous, and we inform them of all possible dangers. It’s October, the rainy season is approaching, and there may be flood hazards. We have protection measures in case of earthquakes and other natural disasters, as well as armed conflicts,” he said.
Liasidis stressed that the bomb shelters located throughout the island will be used for shelter only in the event of an armed conflict.
In the event of an earthquake, people should just go out into the open.
In case of a flood, do not try to hide in the basement in any case.
In case of a tornado, it is necessary to move to the central part of the house away from the windows.
At the moment, there are 2,200 civil defense shelters in Cyprus, which can become a shelter for 30 percent of the population.
“The goal is to reach 70 percent of the population. The rest will not need bomb shelters, as they will work in support services such as the army, police, civil defense, fire department, hospitals, electricity, communications and others. I would like to emphasize that shelters have never been used before,” Liasidis said.
“Once a year we inspect all bomb shelters. Some have water and toilets. If they are not available, we will provide water and toilets when it becomes necessary. All bomb shelters in Cyprus are designed for short-term stays.”
“People will be warned about the bombing by air raid sirens. After that, they will urgently need to seek shelter. You need to move with your hands covering the back of your head to protect your head.”
Civil Defense contacted church representatives to get a list of churches with large enough basements that could be used as shelters.
“We recommend calling the Civil Defense Service and finding out where the nearest bomb shelter is located. To get an address, you just need to say your zip code. The civil defense telephones are 2240 34 50 and 2240 34 52, they work around the clock.”
Note that there is no information on the location of shelters on the Internet, as this is confidential information.
After the sirens, people have to go down to the bomb shelters. When the emergency is over, the sirens will emit a continuous sound that signals that it is possible to return home. In the event of an airstrike, it is necessary to remain calm and take with you a bottle of water and a small snack, necessary medicines and baby food, if necessary. If it is necessary to stay in the bomb shelter for several hours, the civil defense will provide everyone with water and food.
Shelters are designed for everyone who is on the island during the crisis, this applies to both citizens of the country and foreigners.
