The West will not be able to influence Russia supplies weapons to Ukraine, so there is nothing left but negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, said former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

“The idea that it is necessary to stop talking to the Russian president, not to discuss peaceful development or the end of the crisis with him (in Ukraine — ed.), is absurd. Who else can I talk to… it’s impossible when they say: “We will force Russia to peace by supplying weapons to Ukraine.” This has never been possible in European history… it cannot be achieved like this,” Schroeder said, speaking on Thursday evening in Vienna at the “Peace in Europe” discussion organized by the Swiss publication Weltwoche, which was also attended by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Russia believes that arms supplies to Ukraine interfere with the settlement, directly involve NATO countries in the conflict and are a “game with fire.” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that any cargo that contains weapons for Ukraine, will become a legitimate target for Russia. According to him, the United States and NATO is directly involved in the conflict, including not only by supplying weapons, but also by training personnel on the territory of Great Britain, Germany, Italy and other countries. The Kremlin stated that pumping Ukraine with weapons from the West does not contribute to negotiations and will have a negative effect.
