According to data published by the Eurostat statistical service, in 2022, in all EU regions, including Cyprus, which is considered a single region at the NUTS2 level, life expectancy at birth was higher for women than for men.

In particular, in 2022, life expectancy at birth for women in Cyprus was 83.4 years, which is 3.7 years higher than for men (79.7 years), which is close to the EU average, where life expectancy for women was 83.3 years, which is 5.4 years higher than for men ( 77.9 years old).

Life expectancy at birth for women was highest in the Spanish capital Madrid region (87.7 years), while two other Spanish regions, the autonomous community of Navarre (86.9 years) and Castile, ranked second and third, as well as Leon (86.7 years).

The lowest life expectancy at birth for women was recorded in the French department of Mayotte in the French extreme region of Mayotte (74.4 years) on the shores of the Indian Ocean. This was followed by the northwestern (76.4 years), north-central (77.0 years) and southeastern (77.6 years) regions of Bulgaria.

Madrid had the highest life expectancy at birth for men (82.4 years), followed by the autonomous province of Trento in Italy and the Swedish capital Stockholm (both at 82.3 years).

The lowest life expectancy for men (below 70 years) was recorded in three regions: the Northwestern region of Bulgaria (68.7 years), Latvia (69.4 years) and the North-Central Region of Bulgaria (69.6 years).

The largest regional gender differences were recorded in the Baltic States, as well as in several regions of Poland and Romania. The largest gap was recorded in Latvia, where life expectancy at birth for women was 10.0 years higher than for men.

The differences in life expectancy at birth between women and men in general were much smaller in Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands and Sweden. However, the smallest gender gap was observed in Mayotte, France, where life expectancy at birth for women was 0.4 years higher than for men.
