Cyprus intends to join NATO, and the issue of rapprochement with the alliance became a key topic of the meeting between President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulides and U.S. President Joe Biden in late October. This is reported by the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.

Nicosia has developed a plan aimed at joining NATO, which has already been approved by Washington. US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan noted that this step would be a “win-win option” that opens up significant prospects.

Cyprus, being one of the founders of the Non-Aligned Movement, withdrew from it in 2004 after joining the European Union. Christodoulides visited Washington on October 30, which was his first official visit to the American capital since 1996.

Christodoulides, who was elected in February 2022, fully supports anti-Russian sanctions and seeks to strengthen Cyprus’ ties with the United States. However, earlier, the Cypriot authorities noted that serious problems were hindering NATO membership, in particular, opposition from Turkey and Cyprus’ non-compliance with the requirements for membership in the alliance.

The prospects for Cyprus’ successful membership in NATO directly depend on the settlement of the Cyprus conflict and the improvement of relations with Turkey.
