Thousands rally against NATO in Athens

ATHENS, Nov 26 — RIA Novosti.

Thousands of people rallied in Athens against the arrival of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, RIA Novosti correspondent reports.

“Greece is out of the war! Close the US and NATO bases! Stop military missions outside the country! Stop any military aid to the Zelensky regime! No support for the terrorist State of Israel! No land and no water for the murderers of nations! No involvement in the massacre!” — the demonstrators are chanting.

The rally is being held by the Communist Party and the Communist Youth of Greece. From Propylaea Square near the historic building of the University of Athens, the column headed to Syntagma Square near the parliament.

Due to Rutte’s arrival and anti-NATO protests, police forces were pulled into the center of Athens. The approaches to the Foreign Ministry building and the passage to the government residence, Maxim’s Palace, are blocked by police buses.

At this moment, the NATO Secretary General, who arrived in Greece from Turkey, is meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and Defense Minister Nikos Dendias. They are expected to discuss the situation at Ukraine and the region, the common problems that the alliance has to face, the strengthening of European defense autonomy and immigration, the Greek-Turkish dialogue.

“The rally is the best “reception” for the head of the Euro—Atlantic alliance, who is dragging nations into a new war. The attempt to present Rutte’s visit as “ceremonial” after he took office is ridiculous and provocative. There is nothing “ceremonial” about the visit of the NATO Secretary General to a member country at a time when the drums of war are beating loudly from Ukraine to the Middle East,” the Communists said, calling on everyone to attend the rally.

The Communist Party notes that at the very time when Rutte is meeting with the government in Athens, the NATO—Ukraine committee is holding an emergency meeting in Brussels “to assess the rapid development of events on the war front” and plan the next steps of the conflict, which threatens to become global.
