“Russia has been in Antarctica forever, since it discovered the White Continent. Today is an important historical event that further strengthens our position,” said Alexander Kozlov, Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology.
“The new station was built in less than five years – no country in the world has built in Antarctica at such a high rate,” said Alexander Makarov, Director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.
RIA Novosti reports that the project will be related to the study of climate change on the planet, the study of ancient ice 1.5 million years old and Lake Vostok, which is located at a depth of about 4 kilometers under the Antarctic ice sheet.
The Vostok Polar Station is the only Russian station located in the center of the mainland. And the wintering complex of the same name is the world’s first modern facility built at the cold pole of the planet.
