Russia ranked third in the global military shipbuilding industry (navy index) after China and the United States, according to an analysis by IMEMO RAS conducted in 2024. The Russian Federation increased the index from 11,084 points in the previous period to 12,516 this year.
The analysis “Maritime Powers 2024, IMEMO RAS indices” continues a series of annual assessments of the maritime potentials of 100 countries, the publication of which began in 2021.
As for the leaders of the shipbuilding industry, China is still in first place, having scored 17,025 points in this category by the end of 2023 (21,212 in 2022). Although more warships were built in China in 2023, 20 against 17 in 2022, their total standard displacement turned out to be noticeably less – 70 thousand tons against 103 thousand tons (in 2022).
The United States, which scored 15,461 points in this category by the end of 2023 (15,598 in 2022), also built more warships, 17 against 14 a year earlier, but also with a smaller displacement – 66 thousand tons against 71 thousand tons in 2022.
