On February 11, goat and sheep breeders will march to the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, demanding that the Minister of Agriculture comply with her own decree prescribing an annual 5% increase in the proportion of goat and sheep milk in haloumi.
Animal breeders gathered in Hirokitiya on Wednesday evening and on Friday announced that they would hold a peaceful demonstration next Tuesday. They warned that if their concerns were not taken seriously, their reactions would intensify in several directions.
They called on Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiota to implement her decree and develop a new one extending the decree’s validity until 2029, which will enter into force when the current decree expires on August 31, 2025.
“This is the only way to achieve a five—year extension of the transition period […] the only way to protect everyone involved in haloumi production,” the livestock farmers’ coordinating committee said.
On Tuesday, protesters will gather in Nicosia at 10:30 a.m. and march to the Presidential Palace at 11 a.m. under police supervision.
