Cyprus and Egypt Natural Gas Agreements

On February 17, Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi signed two agreements on the development of natural gas fields under the seabed in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

These two agreements demonstrate the determination of the Republic of Cyprus to promote the sustainable development of its natural resources, with the participation of renowned international energy partners, in order to strengthen its role as an energy hub in the eastern Mediterranean and provide the greatest possible benefits to the Cypriot people.

In Cairo, Christodoulides also met with John Ardill, Vice President of Global exploration at the American multinational corporation ExxonMobil, who informed Christodoulides about the progress of the corporation’s activities in Block 5 of the Cyprus EEZ, as well as its future plans for block 10.

In November, Ardill informed the Government of Cyprus that ExxonMobil intends to start drilling in both Block 5, which contains a potential natural gas field called Electra, and Block 10, which contains the Glavk natural gas field.
