The Turkish side has criticized the new Cyprus-Egypt gas agreements, saying they undermine the rights of Turkish Cypriots and could lead to conflict.
“The Greek Cypriots are again imposing their decisions, ignoring our side. They have been pursuing a fait accompli policy since 1963,” the so—called “Foreign Ministry” of the so-called TRNC said. In their opinion, the agreements were signed without taking into account the interests of the Turkish Cypriots, which means they cannot be considered valid.
Cyprus and Egypt have signed two agreements on gas production. Chevron, NewMed Energy and BG Group (Shell) are participating in one of them. This agreement concerns the Aphrodite deposit in the Cyprus exclusive Economic Zone. The second was signed with Total and Eni, giving Egypt the status of a “host state” for Block 6, which includes the Kronos, Zeus and Calypso fields.
All gas production will now go through Egypt. Gas from Cyprus Block 6 will be sent to the LNG terminal in Doumyat for processing. Thanks to this, Eni will be able to use the infrastructure of its Egyptian Zohr field, located nearby.
The occupied territories of Cyprus through Turkey demanded that the international community recognize the existence of “two states” on the island. They believe that the Greek Cypriots are using the support of Western countries to maintain the status quo and continue the policy of isolating the Turkish Cypriots. Meanwhile, the south of the island, the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus, continues to develop energy cooperation with Egypt, strengthening its position in the region.
