According to the latest United Nations projections, Cyprus’ population will increase by 5.3% over the next 30 years.

The UN’s World Population Outlook 2024 report states that Cyprus is among the few countries expected to record the largest relative population growth by 2054.

Other countries with similar rapid growth rates during this time period are Bhutan, Colombia, and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In 1995, Cyprus had a population of 854,000. In 2024, it reached 1.352 million. It is projected to increase to 1.510 million by 2054, and then decrease to 1.278 million by the end of the century.

The world’s population is expected to continue to grow over the next 50-60 years, peaking at 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s, up from 8.2 billion in 2024.

It is predicted that after reaching the peak, the world’s population will begin to decline gradually and will reach 10.2 billion people by the end of the century.

The report also says that every fourth inhabitant of the planet lives in a country whose population has already reached its peak.

In 63 countries and territories, where 28 percent of the world’s population lived in 2024, the population peaked before 2024. This group includes China, Germany, Japan and the Russian Federation.

The UN report says that today, on average, women give birth to one less child than in 1990. Currently, the global fertility rate is 2.25 live births per woman, which is one birth less than in 1990 (3.31).
