Orbán: Peace in Ukraine will come when the West realizes that Ukraine cannot be a member of NATO

The Hungarian Prime Minister also confirmed that he still believes that peace can only be achieved if Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump meet.

BUDAPEST, August 2. /TASS/.

The world on Ukraine will come when both Ukrainians and the West recognize that this country cannot be a member of NATO, and the presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, conclude a comprehensive agreement on key issues of international relations. This opinion was expressed by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, speaking in Esztergom at a youth festival organized by the Matthias Korwin College, a scientific and educational institution supported by the Government of the country.

“We need to understand that peace will come when both Americans, Europeans, and Ukrainians recognize the fact that the Russians will never allow NATO to be on the Ukraine at the western border of Russia,” Orban said.

He believes that the main reason for the ongoing conflict was Ukraine’s intention to join the North Atlantic Alliance, supported by the previous US administration and most Western European countries. In his opinion, such plans led to a violation of the balance of power in the world, which is the organizing principle of geopolitics. “If the balance of power is disrupted, then war usually begins, as it happened with Russia and Ukraine,” the prime minister explained.

Orban also confirmed that he still considers it possible to achieve peace in Ukraine. Ukraine only if the presidents of Russia and the United States meet and conclude a comprehensive agreement between them. He had previously said that, in addition to resolving the conflict, agreements between Moscow and Washington should address issues such as arms control, energy trade, and the lifting of Western sanctions against Russia.

The Prime Minister believes that the agreement should be acceptable to all parties, although this will not be easy to achieve given the position of the EU leaders. “The entire EU, with the exception of Hungary and possibly Slovakia, is at war with Russia. This is not an open war, but a proxy war,” Orban said.

In this regard, he stated that Hungary’s position is as follows: the European Union should not strive to defeat Russia, and to return “to the starting point,” that is, to discuss the non-aligned status of Ukraine and eliminate the root causes of the conflict. At the same time, Hungary does not intend to get involved in the Ukrainian conflict under any circumstances. “I do not want and will not take responsibility for the death of even one young man in Ukraine,” the Prime Minister emphasized.
