Turkey is increasing its military presence in the occupied territories of Cyprus, with its troops numbering in excess of 100,000, according to Turkish state media.
The increase is due to the “deployment of US, Israeli, German and British troops in the region.” At the same time, for the first time, the commander of Turkish forces on the island was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general.
It is noted that Major General Sebahattin Kılıç, who was appointed commander in August 2023, was promoted to Lieutenant General on August 5, 2025, becoming the first officer in this position with such a rank.
Along with this promotion, the combat strength of the Turkish contingent will also be doubled. It is expected that the number of military personnel on the island will soon exceed 100,000.
Previously reduced artillery and engineering units are being transformed into a larger formation with land, air, sea, logistics, and electronic units.
