according to the latest report of the European Social Survey (ESS 2023/24).
The survey participants rated their degree of happiness on a scale from 0 (completely unhappy) to 10 (maximally happy). In the age group of 15 to 34, Cypriot youth received an average score of 7 out of 10, which was the lowest among the 24 European countries participating in the study.
The report’s authors note that the decline in life satisfaction may reflect the social and economic pressures faced by young people in Cyprus, from high housing prices and unemployment to limited career prospects and a sense of instability.
At the opposite end of the ranking are countries in Central and Northern Europe, where young people have the highest levels of happiness. Among the leaders are: Croatia, with a score of 8.2 (the highest in Europe), Slovenia, with a score of 8, and Austria, with a score of 8.
These countries consistently rank at the top of the well-being rankings, which researchers attribute to their high-quality social policies, accessible education, and more stable job markets.
The study also revealed interesting trends between men and women in different age groups across Europe. Among men, happiness levels gradually decrease with age, with a score of 7.5 for the 15-34 age group and a similar score for older ages, but with a slight downward trend.
The picture is different for women: the most satisfied with life were middle-aged participants (35–54 years old) — 7.6 points, while young (15–34 years old) and older (55+) women noted slightly lower rates — 7.6 and 7.4, respectively.
Experts believe that young people in Cyprus face a number of systemic problems: rising cost of living and housing, limited employment opportunities, social isolation and pressure from the digital environment, a sense of injustice and insufficient support from the government.
Sociologists warn that these trends may affect not only the psychological state of the generation, but also its participation in the country’s economy and public life.
