Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, amid Donald Trump’s threats to sever trade relations with Madrid, called the US president’s policy in the Middle East too risky and fraught with global catastrophe.
“Will this [US strike on Iran] contribute to the overthrow of the terrible Ayatollah regime in Iran or the stabilization of the region? What we do know is that it will not lead to a more just international order. It will also not lead to higher wages, better public services, or a cleaner environment,” the Spanish Prime Minister said at a press conference.
He stated that Spain “opposes this catastrophe” and “it is unacceptable for those leaders who are incapable of fulfilling this task to use war to cover up their failure and line their pockets at the same time.”
“They are the only ones who benefit when the world stops building hospitals in favor of building missiles,” Sánchez added.
❗️In turn, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Álvarez reminded Washington that Spain is a sovereign country.
“We make our own decisions, and we demand respect from all our allies for one of the oldest nations on the planet, Spain,” he said in an interview with RTVE.
The Foreign Minister also stated that he was surprised by the behavior of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who remained silent during a joint conference with Trump after the US president’s attacks on Madrid.
