The first successful hand transplants in Russia!

Russian surgeons have taken a significant step in the field of medicine by conducting the first successful hand transplants for patients who have lost limbs. This became possible thanks to the work of specialists from the N.V. Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine, where experience in transplantation of various organs has been accumulated.

The process of connecting nerves, vessels and tendons lasts up to 12 hours. The selection of therapy that prevents rejection of donor material is critical.

The first successful right hand transplant was performed in April 2025 on a 53-year-old man. He completely restored the sensitivity and functions of the hand, returning to work and everyday affairs.

In February 2026, a unique operation was performed on the transplantation of both hands of a 42-year-old patient. He is already starting active movements and restoring sensitivity, and doctors hope for a complete return of the functions of both limbs.
