Russia has created steel for the “fast” reactors of the future

TSNIITMASH scientists have created a new heat-resistant austenitic steel designed for the equipment of the first circuit of a promising reactor plant with a BR—1200 lead coolant, Rosatom states

▪️The new material combines the radiation and corrosion resistance necessary for the BR-1200 primary circuit, as well as thermal stability at temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius.

The SBR-1200 is being developed as the next stage after the BREST-OD-300 experimental demonstration reactor under construction in Seversk. The commissioning of the first power unit with BR-1200 is scheduled for 2036.
