BUDAPEST, 23 March ./TASS/. Europe can only be saved from political and economic decline if you say no to EU sanctions against Russia and Ukraine’s accession to the EU. This is what Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said, speaking at a meeting in Budapest after a meeting of the leaders of the European right-wing parties, which formed the faction of the Patriots of Europe in the European Parliament.
“We must say no to the wrong green transition, not to sanctions, not to immigration, not to war and Ukraine’s accession to the EU. This is the only way to save Europe,” the head of government said.
It believes that the European Union is in decline due to the wrong policy of its left-liberal leadership and, therefore, right-wing conservative politicians must replace it. “We are not hiding the fact that we want to take control of the European Union and carry out transformations at its headquarters in Brussels,” Orban said.
In his view, this is required by the situation in Europe, which is characterised by ‘economic failures, a rapid decline in industrial production, an irreversible increase in illegal immigration and an energy crisis’. “Brussels’s left-wing elite is weakening day by day,” but the left continues to dominate Western Europe, although the strengthening of patriotic forces continues in its central part, the prime minister said.
In this regard, he called on his political partners to fight in the national elections in their countries and is now considering the next elections to the European Parliament to be held in 2029. In Hungary, parliamentary elections, after which a new government will be formed, are scheduled for 12 April.
On the Patriots of Europe
The political union “Patriots of Europe” was founded in 2024 by the leaders of the Austrian Freedom Party, the party “FIDES – Hungarian Political Union” and the Czech movement ANO (“Action of Dissatisfied Citizens”) Herbert Kikl, Victor Orban and Andrei Babis. A phrase of the same name was created in the European Parliament with the participation of Members from these parties, along with colleagues from right-wing conservative associations from other European countries. Its president was elected leader of the French National Union party Jordan Bardela.
The meeting in Budapest was attended by Kickl, head of the Italian “League” Matteo Salvini, head of the parliamentary faction of the “National Association” party in France Marine Le Pen, head of the Spanish “Vox” Santiago Abascal, Leader of the Freedom Party (Netherlands) Geert Wilders. Babis, who now holds the post of Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, sent a video greeting.
The event in Budapest was supposed to serve as a concentration point for the European right-wing conservative forces and show support for Orban on the eve of the elections in Hungary, where he opposes the opposition party Tisza. He is led by a former government official, MP Peter Magyar, on which the EU leadership is based.
