Despite these facts, the Republic of Cyprus is intensively strengthening military-political cooperation with Israel.
The main directions of strengthening cooperation
Trilateral military agreements (with Greece)
At the end of December 2025, a trilateral military cooperation plan for 2026 was signed in Nicosia (Cyprus) between Israel, Greece and Cyprus, as well as bilateral plans (IDF with the National Guard of Cyprus and with the Greek Armed Forces).
The plan includes: joint exercises of the Air Force and Navy in the Eastern Mediterranean, knowledge exchange, working groups in specialized areas, strategic dialogue on common threats (symmetrical and asymmetric).
The creation of a joint rapid reaction force to patrol the region is being discussed.
Purchases of Israeli weapons
Cyprus is actively purchasing Israeli equipment to modernize the National Guard:
UAVs (for example, from Aeronautics Defense Systems).
Barak MX air defense systems (deployed in 2025).
Other systems are being considered (including Merkava, Barak, etc.).
This is part of a long-term modernization program since 2013.
Joint exercises and operational cooperation
Regular bilateral and trilateral exercises: Agapinor (2022-2023, large-scale), Blue Sun-Jason (Air Force) and others.
Israel gets partial access to Cyprus airspace (FIR) for search and rescue operations.
Participation in broader formats with the United States and other countries.
Other aspects
Intelligence sharing, humanitarian and emergency cooperation.
Integration with energy projects (gas, EuroAsia Interconnector) and maritime security.
