Already in the first days of July, Limassol will take an important step towards the digital future: a new intelligent parking space management system will start operating in the city center.
The installation of the equipment is now reaching the finish line, and very soon more than two and a half thousand parking spaces in busy areas will be combined into a single network with online monitoring. The main goal of the project is to save drivers from the exhausting search for free space, reduce congestion and make the parking process transparent and civilized.
The idea of “smart parking” has been discussed in the municipality since 2023, and in June 2025, the contract for the implementation worth 5.17 million euros plus VAT went to Blue Sun Automation Ltd. To date, sensors have already been installed in many street parking lots, and they transmit real-time data on the occupancy of each location. This information will be available to motorists through a special mobile application: just look at your smartphone to see if there are free areas nearby. In addition, through the same application it will be possible to pay for parking electronically, forgetting about paper coupons and the search for vending machines.
But the updates will affect more than just street parking. Several organized parking complexes are also being reconstructed as part of the project. For example, the entrance and exit scheme will be changed at the Enaerios site, as well as the interior space will be redesigned to increase capacity. Similar work awaits parking near Limassol Pier, where there has always been a real shortage of free space at the height of the season. All these measures are aimed at increasing the turnover of parking spaces and reducing the time spent by cars in the center.
As for the cost, the final tariffs have not yet been approved — consultations are continuing at the mayor’s office. According to preliminary data, an hour of parking will cost about 1 euro, and the daily maximum may be 15 euros. At the same time, the authorities are considering the possibility of benefits for permanent residents of central neighborhoods, but emphasize that the main task of the system is not to create long—term parking, but to make sure that places are vacated faster and accessible to everyone. It is also important that digital control will significantly strengthen discipline: inspectors will be able to instantly see violations and respond promptly, which will increase compliance with the rules and reduce the number of disputes.
Limassol is not the only pioneer in Cyprus in this matter. In May 2026, a similar project was launched in Latsia and Yeri as part of the Smart Cyprus state program, which also provides mobile information, specialized places for the disabled and charging for electric vehicles. And in Larnaca, back in June 2025, they signed a contract for 600 thousand euros to implement their digital system with dynamic pricing. All these initiatives indicate that Cypriot cities are synchronously moving towards intelligent traffic management, and the Limassol project is one of the largest and most significant in this series. The authorities acknowledge that the installation of equipment may cause temporary inconvenience, but in the long term, comfort and accessibility for motorists will reach a whole new level.
