The EC has sent a recommendation to the European Executive Agency for Education and Culture to stop allocating a grant of €2 million for one of the world’s largest art forums.

According to the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Henna Virkkunen, the decision is related to the assessment of the position of the organizers after the return of the Russian pavilion to the exhibition.

The Venice Biennale has been held since 1895 and is considered one of the most prestigious venues for contemporary art.

Russia has unveiled its pavilion at the Giardini Gardens in Venice for the first time since 2022. Its opening caused a mixed reaction in Europe and was accompanied by protests.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called the return of the Russian pavilion an important event and noted that the organizers had preserved the independence of the cultural venue.
