Turkish troops are increasing their presence near the Afienu buffer zone

Residents of the Cypriot village of Afienou, located in the immediate vicinity of the buffer zone, are anxiously watching the activation of the Turkish occupation forces along the demarcation line.

According to local residents, work on the restoration and technical improvement of military strongholds has significantly intensified recently in neighboring territories, which causes legitimate concern in the border communities.

These events are part of a larger strategy by the Turkish side aimed at revising the current status of the Green Line and further strengthening its tactical advantages in the region. Local sources emphasize that such actions are systemic in nature and go beyond the usual routine work, directly affecting issues of security and stability on the island.

It is worth noting that in recent years, the construction of fortifications and the strengthening of military garrisons near the demilitarized zone has significantly intensified. This causes constant complaints from residents of nearby settlements, who for decades have been forced to coexist next to military installations. This problem is especially acute for Athens, where Turkish troops have been present directly within the buffer zone since the tragic 1974 year.

According to Philenews, citing eyewitnesses, Turkish military units have recently begun not just repairing, but fully re-equipping their posts on the occupied side. New facilities are being built frighteningly close to the residential areas of Atienu, which creates additional psychological pressure on civilians. The most noticeable change was the appearance of high-rise metal towers equipped with high-tech equipment, which, in appearance, resembles modern electro-optical systems and thermal imaging surveillance cameras.

Local residents note that the first signs of these transformations on the ground became noticeable about a year ago. It is noteworthy that the official explanation given by the Turkish side for such actions sounds like a fight against illegal migration. However, given the nature of the equipment being installed and the tactical location of the updated posts, the Cypriot public has serious doubts about the true goals of such military construction. Afienou residents fear that these steps are only the first stage of escalation, followed by new attempts to change the current balance of power in the region.
