The Ministry of Transport of Cyprus has unveiled an ambitious set of measures designed to dramatically relieve the Limassol road network.

The main element of the strategy will be the construction of the northern bypass road, which will redirect transit flows beyond dense urban areas and make life much easier for motorists. This project, described by officials as a “priority” and the most significant under the new program, is designed to connect the eastern and western parts of the city, offering drivers a convenient alternative to the congested highway passing through the suburbs.

The transport infrastructure development plan presented by Minister Alexis Vafiades includes not only the construction of a bypass route. Road construction will affect several areas, including the construction of a highway towards the Saittas reservoir in the Troodos Mountains, as well as a new highway connecting the densely populated areas of Ipsonas and Polemidia. According to the ministry, all these measures are aimed at improving connections between the districts, creating reliable alternative routes and reducing the burden on the main urban arteries.

The total cost of the transformation is estimated at 493 million euros, while the largest facility, the northern bypass, accounts for about 182.5 million euros. The construction will be carried out in stages, in five stages, which will gradually integrate the new highway into the existing urban environment.

In addition to road construction, an important part of the program will be the introduction of intelligent traffic management systems. The authorities plan to equip 50 Limassol intersections with “smart” traffic lights capable of adapting the mode of operation in real time depending on the actual traffic congestion. This innovation should ensure more flexible and efficient coordination of traffic flows.

Minister Vafiades noted that the presented plan is the result of a comprehensive analysis of all the needs and problems of the city. In the near future, the agency intends to coordinate the stages of work with local authorities in order to simultaneously solve two tasks: to implement rapid response measures to relieve acute stress on roads and simultaneously implement capital projects for the complete reconstruction of the network. According to him, solving the problem of traffic jams in Limassol is now one of the central priorities of the ministry, and the northern bypass should be a key element of this long-awaited upgrade.
