Dear friends,

National Unity Day holds a special place among Russia’s national holidays. It symbolises the momentous choice made by our people in the early seventeenth century, when, amid the turmoil and divisions of the Time of Troubles, they rallied in a shared spirit of patriotism under the leadership of Minin and Pozharsky to defend their homeland, expel foreign invaders, restore sovereignty and pave the way for a strong, independent and prosperous Russian state.

Across the centuries and through successive generations, this example of unity has served as a spiritual foundation of Russian statehood. The fortitude and fraternity of our country’s peoples enabled Russia to withstand history’s gravest trials: to endure times of turmoil, bear the burdens of the devastating Second World War, and defend the independence and freedom of the Motherland and, with it, the whole of Europe. Our country then rose again, rebuilt and accomplished some of the twentieth century’s greatest achievements, bringing Russia renown in science, culture, space exploration and the peaceful work of building a better future.

Today, Russia faces new challenges. The world is undergoing profound upheaval, as the fundamental principles of goodness, justice and mutual respect are called into question. Our country is being subjected to unprecedented pressure directed against its independence and its right to determine its own course of development. Yet, as before, Russia’s multinational people demonstrate solidarity, maturity and a firm resolve to defend the Motherland, its honour and dignity.

Dear compatriots,

You are an integral part of the wider Russian world, guardians of Russian culture, language and traditions. Through your work here in Cyprus, you strengthen the spiritual ties with your homeland, uphold its standing abroad and demonstrate true unity and a sincere love for your country.

I am confident that our shared devotion to the Motherland, its proud centuries-old history and its values will lay the foundation for new achievements, lasting peace and the prosperity of our great, multinational and united Russia.
