The majority of those who died on the water in 2025 were not Cypriot citizens: their share was 61%.

Men accounted for 73% of all victims. Such data was provided by Eliza Karabetyan, a representative of the Safe Water Sports organization. Last year, 33 people drowned on the island: 28 in the sea and five more in inland waters. The statistics were announced at a press conference at the Ministry of Health on the eve of the National Drowning Prevention Day, which is celebrated on July 25.

Most deaths on the water were registered in the free part of Famagusta County — 10. This is followed by Limassol (9), Larnaca (6), Paphos (2) and Nicosia (1). Almost half of the dead — 15 people — were over 70 years old. Another alarming trend: 36% of all incidents occurred from 20:00 to 08:00, when most beaches no longer have lifeguards.
